Books for Kidz

The NZ Anaesthesia ASM is proud to the support the charity Books for Kidz!

Books for Kidz is an initiative started in 2015 by Dr Celine Baber, a specialist at Middlemore Hospital until late 2016.

Dr Baber realised that being in hospital and having surgery can be a terrifying experience for children, and that giving a child a book helped to ease some of their apprehension. Taking childrens’ minds off the wait for surgery, helps them as they go into the operating theatre for their anaesthetic.

Scholastic Books supports this initiative and offers Middlemore Foundation donors special discounts on books for those who prefer to donate a book rather than donate money. Each child is offered a new book to keep, with nurses helping them choose based on their age and interests. Siblings who accompany the child to hospital may also be offered a book. Occasionally several books may be given when there is a special need. Since its inception, more than 3000 books have been given out. With our Organising Committee all based at Middlemore Hospital, this scheme is very close to their hearts. They see the benefits of this project and for some of these children, this is the first book that they have ever owned.

All donations are anonymous and gratefully received. Donations should be made via the Middlemore Foundation website:
