Aotearoa’s history from a different perspective
Hoki whakamuri, kia anga whakamua. Look to the past to help forge the future.
Gain a deeper understanding of the historical origins behind the inequities and intergenerational trauma that exist in our health system.
The Wall Walk – Te Hīkoi Maumahara Workshop, Wednesday 12 November, 10am-2pm.
The Wall Walk – Te Hīkoi Maumahara is an interactive half-day workshop that will open your heart and mind to different perspectives of our nation’s history. It’s designed to raise collective awareness of key events in the history of New Zealand’s bicultural relations by ‘walking through’ time and events. The walk invites new or deeper consideration about particular events, and their impact on Māori and Aotearoa New Zealand.
Workshop outcomes: You will gain a deeper understanding of the historical origins behind the inequities and intergenerational trauma that exist in our health system. The walk may identify gaps in what you have learned or challenge you to unlearn what you know. Through the knowledge gain or refresh, the walk invites participants – before, during and after – to think more about the impact of history on today’s social outcomes. To identify patterns and the role you can play as an individual within the larger system today, tomorrow and ahead.
Prep-work / pre-learning: Each attendee plays a small role in the walk, requiring a little bit of preparation (not much, and interesting stuff). This is a storytelling workshop, and participants will help to tell the stories in a collaborative and supportive environment. Before the workshop you will be split into small groups and allocated a topic in the timeline the Wall Walk wanders through. You will be sent some material (podcasts, videos, readings) on that topic and with your group, turn what you learn into a presentation to share on the day. Creativity is encouraged to express your topic in an engaging way. The aim is to make it memorable.
