Emerging Evidence on Normothermia Solutions: Understanding Differences in Device Performance

Friday 14 November, 7.30 – 8.15am | Arena Lounge, Claudelands Event Centre

Speaker: Professor Nicholas Ralph

Professor Nick Ralph is a healthcare researcher, clinician, and award-winning innovator in patient warming technologies. He leads research focused on surgical recovery, hypothermia prevention, and workforce-led health solutions. He’s published over 70 papers, one in excess of $8 million of grants, raised over $3 million in venture capital, and is a holder of multiple medical device and software patents.

The Symposium is suitable for Anaesthetic Consultant and Registrar attendees.

Symposium Summary

Join us for an evidence based session exploring the performance of surgical warming devices. This session focuses on new data comparing forced-air, resistive, and self-heating blankets under standardised conditions, aligned with IEC 60601-2-35:2021. Key findings highlight variations in how quickly devices reach therapeutic temperatures, as well as differences in thermal distribution and safety compliance—critical factors in preventing perioperative hypothermia and ensuring consistent patient care. The research aims to support clinical decision-making by identifying the most effective and safe warming technologies for use in surgical settings.

In addition, the session will explore the role of zero heat flux technology—specifically the 3M™ Bair Hugger™ Temperature Monitoring System—in providing accurate, non-invasive core temperature monitoring. By integrating with anaesthetic machines, this technology brings real-time visibility to a critical vital sign, supporting more informed intraoperative decisions and enhancing patient safety

Why Attend?

As anaesthetists, you play a vital role in maintaining normothermia throughout surgery. This session will unpack how warming device selection directly influences patient outcomes—reducing blood loss, infection risk, and recovery time. Gain insights into the latest performance data to support safer, more effective intraoperative temperature management.
